Commercial Real Estate in Memphis and our Galaxy

One of the Van Gundy brothers trashes Memphis. Again.

During the Lakers/Mavericks game this afternoon, the skinny Van Gundy brother dumped on Memphis again. Talking about the Gasol trade, he said just getting out of Memphis was the good part of the trade for him. Being on a championship contending team was just a bonus. I don’t have the exact quote, because I don’t have this “Tivo” you speak of. If someone has the exact wording, or a link to the video, PLEASE let me know.

Later in the game, just before halftime he listed his candidates for MVP. Among Lebron James, and Kobe Bryant was the entire Memphis Organization for “adjusting the balance of power in the Western Conference”. He’s actually right about that. The Gasol trade is what started the arms race in the West.

Memphis Area Association of Realtors recommended candidates for tomorrow’s Election

MAAR announced their recommendations for the City of Memphis Election tomorrow.

The most noteworthy endorsement:

Your next mayor?

Herman Morris.

I’m not sure if they’re endorsing him because he’s the best one for the job or if the board thinks he’s the best shot to dethrone the King. According to yesterdays Fox 13/Rasmussen poll, Carol Chumney and he-who-must-not-be-reelected are neck and neck. I’m voting for the Chumster. Carol. I’m voting for Carol.

Edmund Ford buys his mortuary on the cheap. Allegedly.

Someday, I’ll be able to check the news without hearing about our own Kennedy-lite family. Here’s the real estate related Ford family news, whether you like it or not. Check out this news story, and then check out the (conspiracy?) theory about “the rest of the story”.

Your favorite mortician

From the Commercial Appeal:

Memphis City Councilman Edmund Ford may be able to keep his mortuary in its Whitehaven home after all.

His landlord, Dennis Churchwell, had threatened to auction off the 5.8-acre property on Elvis Presley because of its notoriety. It’s where Ford was allowed to rack up a five-digit Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division bill, touching off a scandal that led to the resignation of the utility’s president.

But after the live auction Saturday afternoon, the property’s only bid came from a lender of the Supreme Lending Group in Memphis, who offered Churchwell $750,000 to purchase the property on Ford’s behalf…

Servicemaster moving their headquarters to Memphis.

This mornings Commercial Appeal talks about Servicemaster moving their company headquearters to Memphis.

Memphis has doubled in the last year the number of Fortune 500 companies that call the city home, with International Paper, and now ServiceMaster, joining FedEx and AutoZone.

“There is a momentum in Memphis that has been developing for some time now, and having ServiceMaster relocate its headquarters here is another example of our diverse business environment,” said John Moore, president and CEO of the Memphis Regional Chamber. “It’s exciting that we have so much momentum in the community.”

What qualities does Memphis possess that would a motivate a Fortune 500 company to move their world headquarters from Chicago to Memphis, especially in light of the recent safest/least safe city rankings that show how dangerous Memphis can be?

Memphis is only the 13th most dangerous city in America! High-Five!

There’s an article on The Drudge Report today that says St. Louis is the most dangerous city in America. The complete rankings, from One (safest) to 371 (Most Dangerous) are available here. Our dear Memphis ranks in at number 359.

Other  cities of note:    Little Rock at #349 (That’s bad, not good, Arkansas). Nashville at #333, Chattanooga at #315, Las Vegas at #302, Knoxville at #297, and Los Angeles at #205.

The safest city in America is Brick, New Jersey. How funny is it that the safest city in America is in New Jersey? Good on ya, NJ.

16,000 show up for Idol over the weekend. Some of them better make it.

From The Commercial Appeal:

In all, producers said 16,000 people registered. At least half were singers. Each singer was allowed to take one guest into the Forum, but some performers came alone, so the number of auditions easily could have been more than 9,000.

The show’s executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe, said the 16,000 turnout is the second biggest in the show’s six-season history, short of a 20,000 turnout in Washington, but easily ahead of the 13,000 who showed up in New York, the next biggest “Idol” magnet.

Lythgoe said there is “no correlation” between the number who register and the number chosen to move to the next rounds, but he expected at least 200 contestants to move to new rounds today and Tuesday.

American Idol comes to Memphis. Bring it on, Simon Cowell.

Signups are at FedExForum on Friday and auditions are on Sunday.

From the Commercial Appeal:

The route to Hollywood could be paved through Memphis for “American Idol” hopefuls, who begin registering Friday for Sunday’s Memphis auditions. Registration begins at FedExForum at 6 a.m. Friday, and will continue until Sunday morning when the auditions begin at 8 a.m.

The show’s producers warn that there is “no guarantee that everyone who registers will be given the opportunity to audition. If our time is running short, the producers may walk around the venue to pick out people to audition based on performing ability, look, style, personality and other actors at producer’s sole discretion …”

There are a ton of rules, so be sure to check out the whole story on The Commercial Appeals’ webpage or go to americanidol.com. They’ve got a whole section dedicated to the Memphis auditions, so make sure to check that out if you’re going to try out.

I’m guessing not too many people that are interested in Real Estate are going to try out, Read more »

FedEx Forum Garage Update: Nobody don’t know nothin’

The attorney for Shelby County, Brian Kuhn, says there’s no “smoking gun” evidence indicating who the bad guy(s) are in the FedEx Forum shenanigans. From The Commercial Appeal:

Kuhn and his staff, at the request of the County Commission, have been sifting through as many as 140,000 pages of documents connected to the funding and construction of the garage and arena, home to the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies.

During a joint session of the commission’s audit and public service committees, Kuhn told commissioners decisions about the garage appear to have been made largely by groups of people in meetings, not individuals.

Kuhn said he hasn’t found any “smoking gun” evidence to explain the garage fiasco, which is costing the City of Memphis $6.3 million in federal funds…

Some members of the commission, however, said they are certain that fraud or deception was at play in the matter.

Commissioner Walter Bailey, a longtime critic of the arena project, said he’s convinced there was “subterfuge and chicanery” involved in the deal, which resulted in the Grizzlies receiving profits from garage operations. “This thing was intentional,” he said. Fellow arena critic, Commissioner John Willingham, said with all the attorneys who worked on the arena project, he was skeptical that no one was aware the garage did not meet the federal requirements.

“Not everybody is a dummy. There were plenty of smart people involved,” Willingham said.

How great is that quote? “Not everybody is a dummy.” Yeah, but enough people were stupid enough to let them get away with stealing 6.3 million dollars from the federal grant that I’m going to have to repay in taxes. Thanks for looking out for me, smart guys.
