Willie Herenton nominated for “Best Mayor in the World”. By who?

From The Memphis Flyer:

King Willie

You read that right. Our very own Mayor Willie Herenton is among 50 finalists in the 2008 “World Mayor Award,” given annually to the planet Earth’s best mayor.

From the press release: “According to city residents from all continents, a great mayor must possess these qualities: good administrative abilities, able to provide safety and security and protect the environment, as well as having the ability to foster good relations between communities from different cultural, racial and social backgrounds.

To recap: A great mayor needs to have a) good administrative abilities (Maybe he does. I couldn’t say) b) provide safety (nope) and security (uh-uh) and protect the environment (Sure. Give him the benefit of the doubt here) and c) have the ability to foster good relations between communities from different cultural, racial, and social backgrounds. (ahahahahahahahaha)

He won’t win though. He’s up against the mayors of Los Angeles, Miami, Honolulu, Phoenix, and Minneapolis, and that’s just North America. In fact, when you look at the list of the top 50 nominees, it looks like Memphis is just the token southern city they threw in to keep people from complaining.

  1. I sense some jealousy here Will. Just because you aren’t in King Willie’s coterie and receiving inside information, kickbacks, jobs w/ immediate pay raises that you aren’t qualified for, ect… why would you “hate” on those who are?

Oh, that’s right, he’s an elected official. What was I thinking? You mean all the business he conducts under the table, all the appointments he makes from his security detail to library positions, all the thugs he puts into high ranking positions at LG&W (except for J. Collins),… all these things don’t make him a great mayor?

Maybe it is your criteria that is skewed, have you considered that? Maybe embezzling, multiple children by multiple partners while married, bogus appointments, underhanded business dealings, ect… are all part of a mayor’s job and you simply haven’t taken the time to read the criteria???

Don’t mess with the King! He’ll bite you or send someone to do it and somehow you’ll get in trouble for it!
